Kenia has been modeling since she was quite young, and is very much in demand for fashion shoots and runway shows. While some may think all modeling is the same, fashion modeling is actually quite focused and specialized, to my mind. The emphasis is on showing the clothes, and expressionsand poses are often stylized and formal. What I want to do is to bring out a more elemental part of a woman; to bring emotions to the surface, and to do so in a setting that is as far from a formal fashion shoot as possible. So, though Kenia was experienced, working with me in a beach shoot was a new experience. She excelled, as I thought she would. Kenia is not the stereotypical concept of a fashion model – she is a psychologist with her own private practice, and not at all a diva – a true delight to work with!
The day was not at all typical of Baja, being somewhat overcast, with a wind that picked up dramatically. We used that wind as an accomplice in the session where we could. However, later when she was prone on the sand, it became a foe, blowing gritty sand into eyes, cameras and bags… We retreated behind the dunes for the final images.
As a nod to fashion, we used evening dresses for the most part, including Kenia’s spectacular and sophisticated blue graduation dress that I spotted on her FB profile, and two very contemporary black dresses, one of which had a sculptural black choker
I’m really happy with what we created on that day. To me they convey a real sense of strong femininity in the wild. I hope you enjoy this selection…
